Meridian Trio is an improvisational based music group based in NYC. Formed during their master's studies at the Eastman School of Music, the group features Sam Chandler (Piano), Brendan Nie (Bass), and Sam Schaeffer (Drums).

As performers and composers, the group sound can be defined through their explorations of traditional jazz sensibilities, combining foundational elements like the blues, swing, and improvisation with contrasting musical styles like alternative/indie rock, folk, and electronic music.

The musicians of Meridian Trio value the concept of musical storytelling greatly, allowing them to captivate audiences not only through their seamless musical chemistry, but also through their ability to weave connective threads through all of the members’ unique musical identities.

Meridian Trio has performed in many esteemed venues and performance spaces across the American Northeast and Midwest through the participation in many tours and performance opportunities, including but not limited to a spring tour that concluded in April 2026, and the 2026 Beacon Bonfire festival. The group has also had the privilege of providing music educational experiences, holding a clinic and masterclass at James Madison University during fall of 2025.

Sam Chandler is a dynamic and versatile pianist, composer, and educator from Duluth, Minnesota. From a young age, Sam fell in love with playing Classical piano and music’s ability to communicate deep and complex emotions. However, he desired another outlet of musical expression that focused on freedom, spontaneity, and interaction between musicians in a live, galvanizing setting. This led him straight to Jazz. Sam sought as many opportunities as possible to play and study Jazz as he could, all with a fervent desire to learn how the music worked, allowing him to pursue once-in-a-lifetime opportunities across the country.

Sam aims to connect deeply with audiences wherever he finds himself, showing them a perspective on life they may have never considered.
